St Ronan’s College, Lurgan, Project Update November 2019
The new facilities and buildings currently being planned for the College represent the largest single school project undertaken by the Department of Education.
The school buildings, for example, have a floor area 40% larger than the new Craigavon Leisure Complex which is currently under construction and the level of capital investment needed to complete St Ronan’s is of a similar level to the new Leisure Complex.
An educational facility of the size of St Ronan’s College is a ‘bespoke building’, with specialist accommodation tailored to meet the needs, and interests both curricular and extra-curricular all of the pupils. The school has also been designed to facilitate use by the community after school hours. This has required a significant level of attention to detail and consultation with the school and a detailed process of engagement with the Department of Education to ensure that the facilities planned secure the approval of the Department of Education who will be funding the school building.
· The Department of Education has now issued formal approval to the detailed design alongside approval to proceed to tender once Planning permission has been granted.
All of the reports for the Statutory consultees, eg Planners, Roads, Environmental, and Utilities providers such as the NIE and the Water service have now been completed and will be submitted to Planning in the week commencing 18th November.
These reports will then be uploaded by the Planners to the planning portal and will be advertised in public papers and be available in the library.
Appointing a Contractor:
A number of Contractors have already been short-listed to compete for the construction of the school. A decision on the starting the next phase of the tender competition to award the construction contract to one of the short-listed contractors will be made in early December.
Funding from the Department of Education remains in place for the construction of the school. It should be noted that Planning Approval is required to access that funding.
