At KS3 the Modern Languages department provides a comprehensive introduction to Spanish, French and Irish.  Emphasis is on speaking and listening skills, whilst establishing a good understanding of the spelling systems of all three languages using reading and writing tasks.  Pupils in Year 8 study all three modern languages, choosing to progress with only two in Years 9 and 10.

We currently offer GCSE Spanish, French and Irish using the CCEA exam board.  Pupils can sit examinations at both Higher and Foundation levels, and are assessed in all four skill areas. Assessment is through examination only.

  • Listening (25%)

  • Reading (25%)

  • Speaking (25%)

  • Writing (25%)

At Post 16,  AS and A2 courses in Spanish, French and Irish are offered by St Ronan’s College depending on uptake.  On occasion, collaboration through the Craigavon Area Learning Community takes place to allow pupils to access these courses. At both AS and A2, pupils study literary, historical or cultural topics as well as developing their skills in listening, use of language, translation, comprehension and general conversation.

Pupils studying languages participate in a range of quizzes, theatre trips, cinema visits and public speaking competitions throughout the year.  Pupils also have the opportunity to attend games clubs, film afternoons and themed events. Our pupils are encouraged to attend Gaeltacht colleges in Donegal during the summer months in order to improve their spoken Irish. Opportunities for international visits and trips to France and Spain are also arranged for various year groups.

A good understanding in Modern Languages provides a solid skill set in a range of professions both locally and globally. With a qualification in French, Spanish, Irish or other languages, pupils can access a range of careers such as:

  • Travel and Tourism

  • International Business

  • Computing with Languages

  • International Politics

  • Public Relations

  • Marketing

  • Interpretation

  • Translation

  • Teaching

As well as French, Spanish and Irish, a number of pupils have also sat examinations in their native languages. In the video below you can see a number of our pupils showcasing their language skills.
